The Greek Educational Centre

The Greek Educational Centre offers courses on Modern Greek language. It was well established before the arrival of our current teacher, Elias Pavlides, in New Zealand in 2002. 

The courses on Modern Greek Language are for adults and children. Each class, according to level of knowledge for the adults and usually the age for the children, has one lesson a week (1.50 hours). 

Over the past few years the Centre has been housed at the facilities of the Greek Community. Some of the classes take place at Elias' home (Royal Oak / Onehunga) as it can be more convenient for the students living south.

The Educational Centre has the ability to accommodate more students. The lessons are after work, school and on Saturday. Currently there is an option of adding extra classes if there are students who are willing to attend the courses.

In the past, in conjunction with others which include the Classical Association of Auckland and the University of Auckland, the Centre, through Elias, has organised very successful and well attended events: Poetry Nights, Lectures, Presentations, Movie and Documentary Nights, which will continue in the future as well. 

About Elias

Elias studied Pedagogics in the Aristotelian University of Thessaloniki and graduated in 1991 with a Bachelor in Primary School Education. After working in several schools in Greece he was appointed by the Greek Government to teach Modern Greek in New Zealand. Elias arrived in January 2002 and is the sole teacher, over seeing all the courses of the Centre. 

He has also taught courses of Modern Greek at the University of Auckland (2004 – 2006); studied Classical Greek (BA Hons) and was awarded a Masters in Classical Greek in 2012, under the supervision of Prof. Vivienne Gray. Elias is a PhD candidate in Greek, with results still pending. He has periodically been tutoring the course GREEK 100 at the University of Auckland.
